The Right Way to Use Podcasts for OET Listening — Quality Over Quantity
Why You're Not Improving Despite Hours of Listening
A common problem for OET candidates is listening to podcasts or videos using an incorrect method. You might wonder: How can listening be incorrect? The answer lies in what your brain is actually doing with that input.
The issue is attempting to consume a large volume of content rather than mastering what you hear. This is comparable to someone who tries to learn a new language every day without choosing one to master — the result is zero progress, regardless of effort.
The Real Problem: Volume Without Mastery
Think about how much English you have already been exposed to throughout your life:
- 🎬 Movies and TV series
- 🎵 Songs
- 🎙️ Podcasts and social media
- 🏫 School and university classes
Despite all of this exposure, you may still struggle to catch every word in a medical consultation or healthcare lecture. Why? Because you were never signalling to your brain that this input needs to be mastered.
You cannot simply instruct your brain to "listen carefully." The brain requires persistent reinforcement — learning how a sentence is pronounced, how it is written, the speed at which it is spoken, and its exact meaning. Only then will your brain recognise the importance of the information and process it effectively.
💡 Key Insight: Success in OET listening does not come from quantity, but from mastery. It is about conditioning the brain to recognise that specific information is important and ensuring it is fully learned before moving forward.
The 3-Stage Mastery Method
Here is the exact action plan you should follow. Choose a standard podcast (links provided below) and repeat the following three stages until the material feels highly familiar:
Stage 1 — Slow Listen with Subtitles (0.75× Speed)
- Play the podcast with subtitles at 0.75× speed
- Pause whenever you encounter an unfamiliar word
- Translate and learn the meaning of every new vocabulary item before continuing
Stage 2 — Normal Speed with Subtitles (1.0× Speed)
- Listen again with subtitles at normal speed (1.0×)
- Evaluate whether you accurately heard the content or missed anything
- Confirm that you have genuinely learned all new vocabulary from Stage 1
Stage 3 — Normal Speed Without Subtitles
- Listen at normal speed with no subtitles
- Check whether you can hear every word spoken clearly
- Identify any parts that still need further reinforcement and return to those sections
🔁 Repeat this 3-stage cycle with the same podcast episode until you feel confident mastery of the material before moving to the next episode.
Shadowing: The Bonus Technique
While listening, practise the shadowing technique — repeat what you hear in real time, matching the speaker's rhythm, pronunciation, and intonation. This will:
- Reinforce vocabulary retention
- Develop your speaking skills simultaneously
- Train your ear to process speech at natural speed
Commit to the System: 2 Months
Commit to this system for at least two consecutive months. After this period, you will notice significant, measurable results. Remember:
- ❌ Not from quantity of hours
- ✅ From quality of mastery over the material
