Grammar for OET: A Complete Guide to Improving Your Writing and Language Skills

Grammar in OET

How can we improve our grammar? How long does it take? Do I only need OET-specific grammar, or should I focus on general English grammar to improve my overall language skills?

First, grammar for the OET is divided into two main categories:

1. OET-Specific Grammar (The Most Important)

The first and most crucial category is the grammar tailored specifically for the OET. These are the exact grammatical rules and structures you need to write letters correctly.

When studying this section, the focus is entirely on the grammatical rules applied during letter writing. Your accuracy in utilising these rules is directly assessed under the Language criterion in the OET Writing sub-test.

Where to Study OET-Specific Grammar

There are two primary resources for mastering this section:

2. General English Grammar

The second category is general grammar, which focuses on overall language development. Improving this foundation is incredibly beneficial for elevating your general English proficiency and will significantly support your performance across all four sub-tests: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Important Tips for Your Preparation

Limited preparation time? It is highly recommended that you start immediately with OET-specific grammar rather than general grammar.

Who should study general grammar? Focusing on general grammar is best suited for candidates who have a preparation period of 3 months or more, or those who are studying full-time and have plenty of time to spare.
