Short answer: the fastest way to find an OET speaking partner is OET Study Partner on OET Ultimacy. Create a card with your first name, exam date, profession and what you want to practise, press Join, and your best matches are already waiting: people who sit OET when you do, in your profession, with your goals and your mother language. It takes under a minute, it is free with any OET Ultimacy account, and your phone number never appears on your card.
Why you need a partner for OET Speaking
OET Speaking is a conversation, so you cannot practise it alone. After a short warm-up that is not marked, you do two role plays. For each one you get 3 minutes to prepare your card and about 5 minutes to speak, while the interlocutor plays the patient, a relative or a carer. OET assessors mark the recording later.
Reading role-play cards in your head is not the same as handling a worried patient who interrupts you. A partner plays that patient, asks the question you did not expect, keeps the time, and tells you where you lost the thread.
A good partner helps with the rest of OET too:
- Writing: you swap letters and mark each other's work.
- Reading and Listening: you sit the same mock test and compare answers.
- Motivation: someone checks every day that you studied, and you do the same for them.
What makes a good OET study partner

Four things matter most, and they are the four things OET Study Partner matches you on:
- The same exam window. Someone who sits OET in the same weeks as you has the same deadline and the same urgency. You start together, you speed up together, and nobody drops out halfway because their exam is six months later.
- The same profession. OET Speaking and Writing are written for your profession. A nurse's role plays are not a pharmacist's role plays, so a partner from your profession practises the cards you will actually meet.
- The same goal. Decide what you want before you look: a Speaking role-play partner, a Writing feedback swap, daily accountability, group study, or Reading and Listening practice.
- The same mother language. A partner who shares your first language knows the mistakes it makes in English, and can spot them in your speaking. Practise in English, always.
Two more things help: study times that overlap (morning, afternoon, evening or night) and a time zone you can work with. Both are on every card.
Every card on OET Study Partner says why it matches you, for example "Exam within a week of yours · Medicine · Arabic". If you have not booked your exam yet, you meet others who are still choosing a date.
How to find an OET study partner in under a minute

- Open OET Study Partner and sign in with your OET Ultimacy account.
- Create your card: your first name, exam date, profession and what you want to practise. You can also add your target grade, your study times and a short note about you.
- Press Join. Your best matches are already waiting: people who sit OET when you do, in your profession, with your goals and your mother language.
- Send a request. It is one short message. The other person can accept, decline or block.
- Chat and practise. Once they accept, you chat on the website, reply to messages, and share practice links.
We timed it at a normal reading pace: from opening the page to seeing real best matches took about 49 seconds.
Your privacy: what your card shows, and what it never shows

| On your card | Others see | Never shown |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Your first name only | Your surname |
| Exam | The month, like "Jan 2027 · in 10 weeks" | Your exact exam date |
| Contact | A Message button | Your phone number, email or links |
| Who you study with | Only people your choice allows | The choice itself |
- Who I study with: choose women only, men only or anyone. It works both ways: people outside your choice never see your card, and you do not see theirs. Nobody sees the choice itself.
- Show my card: need a break? Turn it off, and nobody can find you or send you new requests. Your chats and groups keep working.
- No contact details in requests: a first request cannot include a phone number, link, email or username. You decide if and when to share a number, later, in the chat.
- Stay safe: OET Ultimacy cannot check who anyone is, so share personal details only when you are comfortable. If someone makes you uncomfortable, report or block them in one tap.
A 13-minute OET Speaking round with your partner

Use real-format role-play cards, like our OET Speaking cards, which are free to practise. Then run each card like the exam:
| Step | Time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Prepare | 3 minutes | You read your card. Your partner reads the patient's card. |
| 2. Role play | 5 minutes | Your partner plays the patient. Keep a timer, like the exam. |
| 3. Feedback | 5 minutes | Your partner marks you with the OET criteria below. |
| 4. Swap | Your partner takes the next card. Do two cards each, like the exam. |
Two cards each takes under an hour, and you both get the full exam experience twice.
What your partner should listen for
OET marks Speaking on four language criteria and five clinical communication criteria. Give your partner this list:
- Intelligibility: can you be understood easily? Listen for pronunciation, word stress and intonation.
- Fluency: do you speak at a natural pace, without long pauses or false starts?
- Appropriateness of language: do you use words a patient understands, and the right tone for the situation?
- Resources of grammar and expression: do you use a range of grammar and vocabulary, accurately?
- Relationship building: do you greet the patient, show empathy and stay respectful?
- Understanding and incorporating the patient's perspective: do you ask about the patient's ideas, concerns and expectations, and respond to them?
- Providing structure: do you explain what you will do and move through the conversation in a clear order?
- Information gathering: do you start with open questions, listen, and summarise?
- Information giving: do you give information in small chunks and check that the patient understood?
Tips that make partner practice work
- Play the patient properly. Give information only when asked, and add a worry or an emotion. An easy patient gives your partner an easy role play.
- Record your role plays, with your partner's agreement, and listen back together. You will hear things you missed while speaking.
- Repeat the same card after the feedback. The second try shows whether the feedback worked.
- If you sit Speaking at home on computer, practise on camera too. Our guide OET paper vs computer explains how Speaking at home works.
- Get expert feedback from time to time. A partner gives you practice; a certified OET teacher shows you exactly what to fix. Book an OET Speaking mock with Dr Ahmed Elgendy, or, if you are a doctor, join the OET Speaking course.
Practise out loud on Discord, without your number
Every chat on OET Study Partner has three shortcuts at the top: Discord, Speaking cards and Free materials. For speaking practice, the Discord shortcut lets you practise out loud without sharing your number or your private life.
Inside the chat, the + button shares OET Ultimacy practice in one tap: Listening Part A practice, Listening mocks, Reading mocks, OET Writing, Recent Exams Analysis and OET Vocabulary, plus our WhatsApp group, Telegram channel and YouTube channel. You can also reply to a specific message, like a messaging app.
Swap Writing letters and keep each other on track
- Writing swap: both of you write a letter for the same case notes in OET Writing practice, with 5 minutes to read and 40 minutes to write, and a word counter like the computer test. Then swap and mark each other's letters on the six OET Writing criteria: Purpose, Content, Conciseness and Clarity, Genre and Style, Organisation and Layout, and Language.
- Reading and Listening: sit the same OET Listening mock or OET Reading mock, then compare every answer you disagree on. Explaining why an option is right is the fastest way to learn it.
- Daily accountability: agree on a plan and check in every day. The OET study planner builds the plan for you.
Study groups of up to 10 people

Want to study as a team? Create a group of 2 to 10 people, including you.
- Private: invite only the people you choose, from your chats or with an invite link.
- Public: people can find the group and ask to join, and you decide who comes in.
The group chat shows when someone joins or leaves, and it has the same shortcuts and the same + button as a one-to-one chat. Groups work well for a weekly Speaking circle, a Writing swap group, or everyone who sits OET in the same month.
Social media groups vs OET Study Partner
Facebook, Telegram and WhatsApp groups are great for news and materials. Finding one partner there is harder:
| Social media groups | OET Study Partner | |
|---|---|---|
| Finding a partner | Post, scroll and wait for replies | Best matches ranked for you as soon as you join |
| Exam date | Rarely shown | The exam month on every card |
| Profession and goals | You ask each person | On every card |
| Your phone number | Often shared to start talking | Never on your card. Discord for speaking. |
| Taking a break | Leave the group | Turn off Show my card |
| Women only or men only | Depends on the group | Your choice, both ways |
| Cost | Free | Free with any OET Ultimacy account |
